The Procession to Calvary
Historical Context
Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio painted this Procession to Calvary around 1505, depicting the crowd accompanying Christ on the Via Dolorosa. Son of the great Domenico Ghirlandaio, Ridolfo was a respected Florentine painter who absorbed influences from both his father's narrative tradition and the innovations of Leonardo and Raphael. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with clear narrative staging and warm Florentine coloring. The processional composition arranges multiple figures in a landscape setting with the spatial clarity inherited from the Ghirlandaio workshop.
