Saint Lawrence before the Prefect
Historical Context
The Master of the Cologne Legend of Saint Ursula painted this Saint Lawrence before the Prefect around 1510 for the National Gallery. The martyrdom of Lawrence was one of the most popular hagiographic subjects in Cologne, where the saint was widely venerated. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The narrative panel presents the confrontation between the deacon and Roman authority in the detailed Cologne workshop manner, with careful attention to costume, architecture, and the dramatic moment.
