Madonna and Child
Francesco Vecellio·1518
Historical Context
Francesco Vecellio, Titian's older brother, painted this Madonna and Child around 1518 for Santa Maria Annunziata. Working in the shadow of his more famous sibling, Francesco maintained a competent practice in the Belluno region, producing devotional panels in the Venetian manner. The 1510s were a decade of extraordinary artistic achievement across Europe, shaped by the mature works of Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and the Venetian masters.
Technical Analysis
The panel reflects the Venetian devotional tradition with warm color harmonies and atmospheric depth, though lacking the extraordinary painterly freedom that distinguished his brother Titian's work.
