St. Anthony Abbot and St. Paul the Hermit
Bernhard Strigel·1507
Historical Context
Bernhard Strigel painted Saints Anthony Abbot and Paul the Hermit in 1507, depicting the famous meeting of the two desert fathers. The story of Paul, the first hermit, being visited by Anthony was a popular monastic subject drawn from Jerome's Life of Paul. Strigel's version reflects Swabian devotional tastes. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Strigel's characteristic blocky figures and bright, clear coloring. The wilderness setting provides a suitable backdrop for the encounter between the two ascetic saints.
