Madonna with Angels
Historical Context
The Master of the Holy Blood painted this Madonna with Angels around 1510 for the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. Named after an altarpiece in the Chapel of the Holy Blood in Bruges, this anonymous master produced refined devotional panels that continued the Bruges tradition in the early sixteenth century. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The panel demonstrates the characteristic Bruges devotional style with luminous oil technique, rich coloring, and the gentle, contemplative atmosphere that the Master of the Holy Blood inherited from the tradition of Gerard David.
