Fragment from Christ Carrying the Cross: Mourning Virgin by Jean Hey

Fragment from Christ Carrying the Cross: Mourning Virgin

Jean Hey·1502

Historical Context

Jean Hey, the Master of Moulins, painted this fragment showing the Mourning Virgin from a Christ Carrying the Cross around 1502. Hey was the most accomplished painter working in France during the late 15th century, serving the Bourbon court at Moulins. His refined technique rivaled the best Netherlandish masters and earned him the title of the French Memling. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with extraordinarily refined execution and delicate emotional expression. The Virgin's grief is conveyed through subtle facial modeling and the controlled handling of tears and reddened eyes, demonstrating Hey's mastery of the Netherlandish technique.
