Holy Family
Historical Context
Mariotto Albertinelli painted this Holy Family around 1505 during his partnership with Fra Bartolomeo in Florence. The intimate domestic format of the Holy Family was increasingly popular among Florentine patrons for private devotion. Albertinelli's version reflects the harmonious classicism that he shared with his monastic collaborator. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with warm Florentine coloring and balanced pyramidal composition. The soft modeling and gentle expressions show Albertinelli's characteristic grace, influenced by both Fra Bartolomeo and Raphael's early works.
