Nicolas Dipre painted Joachim and Anne Meeting at the Golden Gate around 1500, part of his Life of the Virgin cycle for a Provençal church. The meeting at the Golden Gate of Jerusalem, following the angel's announcement of Anne's miraculous conception, was a beloved scene in Marian devotion. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
