The Holy Kinship
Historical Context
The Master of the Lille Adoration painted this Holy Kinship around 1525, depicting Christ's extended family in a multi-generational grouping. The Holy Kinship was one of the most popular devotional subjects in the Netherlands, reflecting the cult of Saint Anne. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
The panel shows the workshop's refined technique with numerous carefully individualized figures, warm domestic setting, and the rich detail characteristic of Netherlandish holy family compositions.
