The Adoration of the Magi
Historical Context
Benvenuto Tisi da Garofalo painted this Adoration of the Magi around 1506 for the Gemäldegalerie Berlin. Garofalo was developing his mature style in Ferrara, increasingly influenced by Raphael's compositions and Venetian colorism, which he blended with the traditional Ferrarese precision that remained the foundation of his art. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The Epiphany scene demonstrates Garofalo's characteristic warm palette and gentle modeling, with the elaborate procession of the Magi rendered in the detailed manner that combined Ferrarese precision with Raphaelesque grace.
