Madonna mit Kind mit dem jungen St. Johannes
Alonso Berruguete·1510
Historical Context
Alonso Berruguete's Madonna mit Kind mit dem jungen St. Johannes, dated around 1510 and now at Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, represents a rare surviving example of the Spanish sculptor-painter's early work from his Italian period. Berruguete spent approximately 1504 to 1517 in Italy, working in Florence and Rome where he encountered Michelangelo's sculpture, emerging Mannerist tendencies, and the legacy of Leonardo. As a painting from his Italian years, this Madonna and Child with the young Baptist shows Berruguete absorbing Florentine influence before he returned to Spain to become the foremost sculptor of the Spanish Renaissance. The work is thus important in tracing the formation of one of the sixteenth century's most original artistic personalities, standing at the intersection of Italian High Renaissance idealism and the proto-Mannerist restlessness that would define Berruguete's mature achievement.
Technical Analysis
Even at this early stage, Berruguete's figures show a restlessness and expressive intensity uncommon in conventional Florentine Madonna compositions. Contours have a taut searching quality. Colour is handled with confidence and the interaction between the Christ child and the young Baptist carries a psychological charge that distinguishes the work from more devotionally passive examples of the type.
