The Rest on The Flight into Egypt
Historical Context
The Master of the Holy Blood painted this Rest on the Flight into Egypt around 1510, depicting the Holy Family pausing during their journey from Herod's massacre, the Virgin nursing the infant Christ while Joseph rests nearby. The Rest on the Flight was a beloved devotional subject that allowed painters to explore the tender maternal relationship between Mary and the infant Christ in a natural setting removed from the formal hierarchy of the sacred conversation. This Bruges master's version combines careful attention to the natural setting—trees, ground cover, atmospheric distance—with the intimate figure grouping that characterizes the best Flemish treatments of the subject. The informal, quasi-pastoral quality of the Rest on the Flight gave it particular appeal for private devotional use, its warmth and intimacy suited to personal prayer.
Technical Analysis
