Menalippe (from the Amberley Castle, 'Heroines of Antiquity') (Amberley Queens) by Lambert Barnard

Menalippe (from the Amberley Castle, 'Heroines of Antiquity') (Amberley Queens)

Lambert Barnard·1526

Historical Context

Menalippe, another Amazon queen, appears in the Amberley heroine series as one of several legendary warrior women presented to the residents of the Bishop of Chichester's castle. Menalippe's mythological role was as Hippolyta's sister, captured by Heracles during his expedition for the girdle; her presence in the Amberley programme alongside Hippolyta and Lampedo reflects the humanist tendency to present the Amazon queens as a group, their collective identity as exceptional warrior women transcending individual mythological episodes.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel. Within the series format, Menalippe would have been distinguished primarily by inscription rather than a dramatically distinct attribute, since the Amazon queens' visual appearance was largely interchangeable. The inscribed name above or below the figure was standard in heroine series to ensure correct identification by learned viewers.
