Life of St Benedict, Scene 11: Benedict Founds Twelve Monasteries
Il Sodoma·1505
Historical Context
This fresco of Benedict founding twelve monasteries is part of Sodoma's Monte Oliveto Maggiore cycle. The scene illustrates the historical expansion of Benedictine monasticism from Subiaco, where Benedict established his first communities before founding the great abbey of Monte Cassino around 529 AD. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The fresco employs an expansive architectural and landscape setting to convey the scope of Benedict's monastic foundations, with Sodoma's characteristic elegant figures moving through carefully constructed spaces.
