Madonna with Child
Lorenzo Costa·1505
Historical Context
Lorenzo Costa painted this Madonna and Child around 1505 for the Vittorio Cini collection. By this period Costa had left Bologna for Mantua, where he succeeded Mantegna as court painter to the Gonzaga family, continuing to produce refined devotional panels alongside his court commissions. Lorenzo Costa was a Ferrarese painter who worked at the courts of Mantua and Ferrara, producing accomplished portraits and devotional works in the northern Italian Renaissance tradition.
Technical Analysis
The panel shows Costa's mature style with soft modeling, warm Emilian coloring, and the gentle devotional atmosphere that characterizes his work at the transition between Ferrarese sharpness and Bolognese sweetness.
