Saint Julien de Rimini ?
Vittore Crivelli·1491
Historical Context
Saint Julien de Rimini, at the Musée du Petit Palais in Avignon, may depict Julian the Hospitaller—the patron saint of innkeepers and travelers—whose complex legend included an episode of accidental patricide followed by penitence and miraculous redemption. Vittore Crivelli's Avignon panel belongs to the group of individual saint panels that formed wings of larger altarpiece programs or served as independent devotional objects. The Petit Palais in Avignon holds one of the most comprehensive collections of Italian panels outside Italy, particularly strong in works from the Marche and other regional schools.
Technical Analysis
The saint is presented in a formal standing posture against a plain ground or simple architectural setting, his identifying attributes rendered with the careful material description characteristic of the Crivelli workshop manner Vittore inherited. The face is modeled with relatively soft oil transitions despite the harder decorative elements of the costume.
