Maria Magdalena ; Johannes de Evangelist
Lucas Moser·1490
Historical Context
This panel showing Mary Magdalene and John the Evangelist is attributed to Lucas Moser — or his circle — and may have formed the wings of the same Tiefenbronn altarpiece programme as his documented 1431 panels, or a related commission. The pairing of Magdalene with John the Evangelist was a standard flanking combination for Passion-related altarpieces, as both figures were present at the Crucifixion according to the Gospel accounts. Moser's style, if the attribution holds, would make this an important additional evidence of his manner beyond the one securely dated panel.
Technical Analysis
The panel employs the early Flemish-influenced oil technique characteristic of Moser's documented work: careful modelling of flesh and drapery through layered glazes, attention to material surfaces of costume and attributes. The two saints are shown as standing or half-length figures with their identifying attributes — Magdalene's ointment jar, John's eagle or book. The panel quality is consistent with the ambitious technical approach of the Tiefenbronn altarpiece.
