Portrait miniature possibly of Anne Boleyn
Lucas Horenbout·1525
Historical Context
Lucas Horenbout was a Flemish illuminator and miniaturist who became court painter to Henry VIII of England, where he is credited with establishing the tradition of portrait miniature painting in England that would culminate in Nicholas Hilliard. This miniature, possibly depicting Anne Boleyn — the woman Henry would marry in 1533 after the most consequential divorce proceedings in English history — is thus of explosive historical interest, even if the identification remains debated. Dating to around 1525, it would predate Anne's rise to royal prominence, yet her presence at the English court was already notable. The Royal Ontario Museum preserves this small work of enormous potential biographical significance.
Technical Analysis
The portrait miniature presents the sitter at close range against the characteristic blue ground of Horenbout's English miniatures. The face is modeled with the Flemish precision Horenbout brought to the English court. Headwear and collar are rendered in fine detail, and the intimate scale of the miniature format creates an atmosphere of personal access.
