Madonna der Milch
Maestro de Perea·1510
Historical Context
The Maestro de Perea's Madonna der Milch (Madonna of the Milk or Virgo Lactans), painted around 1510 and now at the Museu de Belles Arts de València, depicts the Virgin nursing the Christ child — one of the most intimate and theologically resonant subjects in Marian iconography. The image of Mary as nursing mother, the Galaktotrophousa in Byzantine tradition, emphasized the full humanity of the incarnate Christ who depended on his mother's body for nourishment. The Maestro de Perea is an anonymous Valencian painter whose identity is defined by a group of stylistically coherent works, all showing the influence of Italian Renaissance painting filtered through the distinctive Valencian tradition.
Technical Analysis
The nursing Madonna subject requires tender intimacy: the Virgin's partially exposed breast and the feeding child are the devotional focus, treated with reverence. Valencian color warmth and Italian-influenced figure modeling combine in this intimate devotional image.
