Resurrection
Historical Context
Raffaellino del Garbo was a Florentine painter who trained under Filippino Lippi and initially showed great promise before his career declined in the early sixteenth century. This Resurrection, now in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, reflects his early competence in the Florentine tradition of narrative religious painting during the period of transition from the quattrocento to the High Renaissance. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
The composition demonstrates Raffaellino's training in the Lippi workshop through its clear spatial construction and graceful figure types, with the detailed landscape and atmospheric effects that characterized the best Florentine painting of the period.
