Presentation in the Temple

Jan Baegert painted this Presentation in the Temple around 1505 as part of an altarpiece cycle in Wesel. The ritual presentation of the infant Christ to the aged Simeon was a standard Marian narrative scene. Baegert's treatment follows Lower Rhenish conventions with his characteristic directness. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
