Saint Bernardin de Sienne et saint Louis de Toulouse
Vincenzo Civerchio·1500
Historical Context
Vincenzo Civerchio painted Saints Bernardino of Siena and Louis of Toulouse around 1500 in Crema. Both Franciscan saints were widely venerated in northern Italy. Civerchio's provincial Lombard style combines local traditions with broader Renaissance influences. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Civerchio's careful Lombard technique. The paired Franciscan saints are rendered with their traditional attributes and the clear coloring of the Crema school.
