Trois pèlerins en route vers Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle by Master of the Legend of Saint James

Trois pèlerins en route vers Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle

Master of the Legend of Saint James·1490

Historical Context

The Master of the Legend of Saint James painted this scene of three pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela around 1490. The Camino de Santiago was the greatest pilgrimage route in medieval Europe, and representations of pilgrims en route served both devotional and promotional purposes. The pilgrims' distinctive attributes — staff, scallop shell, and broad hat — made them instantly recognizable.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with careful depiction of the pilgrim figures and their journey through a landscape. The Upper Rhenish painter renders the pilgrims' costume and attributes with documentary precision.
