Trois pèlerins en route vers Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle
Historical Context
The Master of the Legend of Saint James painted this scene of three pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela around 1490. The Camino de Santiago was the greatest pilgrimage route in medieval Europe, and representations of pilgrims en route served both devotional and promotional purposes. The pilgrims' distinctive attributes — staff, scallop shell, and broad hat — made them instantly recognizable.
Technical Analysis
