Historical Context
This early panel of Saint Sebastian by Botticini, dated 1466, shows the artist at the beginning of his career when he was still developing his personal style from the examples of Verrocchio, Castagno, and Botticelli. The youthful saint, pierced by arrows, was one of the most frequently depicted martyrs in Renaissance Florence, invoked as a protector against plague. The elegant, almost decorative treatment of the suffering saint reflects contemporary Florentine taste.
Technical Analysis
