Madonna and Child
Francesco Botticini·c. 1475–1480
Historical Context
Francesco Botticini's Madonna and Child, painted in tempera on poplar around 1475-1480, is a characteristic Florentine devotional panel from the early Renaissance. These intimate panels were produced in large numbers for domestic worship in Florentine households, placed in bedchambers and private chapels. Botticini, working in the orbit of Verrocchio's influential workshop, contributed to the standard of refined but accessible Marian imagery that defined Florentine piety.
Technical Analysis
The tempera-on-poplar technique produces the clear, bright colors and precise lines typical of Quattrocento Florentine painting. Botticini's Madonna follows the Verrocchesque type with idealized features and a serene expression, framed by carefully drawn drapery folds.
