Lamentation over the Body of Christ
Gerard David·c. 1500
Historical Context
Gerard David, the last great master of the Bruges school, painted this Lamentation around 1500, during a period when Bruges was declining as a commercial center but remained an important artistic hub. The subject of Christ's followers mourning over his body after the Crucifixion was a standard devotional theme. David's interpretation emphasizes quiet grief rather than dramatic emotion, characteristic of his contemplative approach to religious painting.
Technical Analysis
David's oil-on-panel technique achieves remarkable luminosity through careful layering of translucent glazes. The composition is tightly organized with restrained gestures, while the landscape background demonstrates his mastery of atmospheric perspective in the Netherlandish tradition.
