Christ Carrying the Cross
Historical Context
The Master of the Freising Visitation painted this Christ Carrying the Cross around 1490, a Passion scene from the late Gothic painting tradition of Bavaria. Named after a Visitation altarpiece in Freising, this anonymous master worked in the region around Munich during the period when German painting was being transformed by the influence of Dürer and the Italian Renaissance. This panel preserves the expressive, emotionally intense approach of late Gothic devotional art.
Technical Analysis
The oil on panel demonstrates the angular, expressive style of late Gothic Bavarian painting with its emphasis on the physical suffering of Christ. The dramatic figure poses and the crowded composition create the emotional intensity characteristic of Northern European Passion imagery.
