Glasses in a Basket by Sebastian Stoskopff

Glasses in a Basket

Sebastian Stoskopff·1643

Historical Context

Stoskopff painted Glasses in a Basket in 1643, one of his signature trompe-l'oeil compositions featuring the Venetian-style drinking glasses that were his specialty. Working in Strasbourg during the devastation of the Thirty Years' War, Stoskopff developed a meditative approach to still life that combined meticulous naturalism with symbolic undertones of fragility and transience. Glass, with its transparency and vulnerability, served as the perfect metaphor.

Technical Analysis

The painting demonstrates Stoskopff's extraordinary ability to render transparent glass with trompe-l'oeil precision, capturing refraction, reflection, and the subtle distortions of light passing through the vessels. The simple composition focuses all attention on the material properties of glass.
