St. Veronica with the Holy Kerchief by Master of Saint Veronica

St. Veronica with the Holy Kerchief

Master of Saint Veronica·1420

Historical Context

The Master of Saint Veronica's Saint Veronica with the Holy Kerchief, painted around 1420 for the Bavarian State Painting Collections, is the painting from which the anonymous Cologne master takes his name. The subject of Veronica displaying the sudarium with Christ's true image was central to late medieval devotion in the Rhineland. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting. The tension between Gothic grace and Renaissance structure gives art of this period a distinctive energy.

Technical Analysis

The saint holds the miraculous cloth bearing Christ's face in a frontal composition of iconic simplicity, rendered with the soft modeling and gentle color harmonies that characterize the Cologne school of painting.
