Triptych of Jan Floreins by Hans Memling

Triptych of Jan Floreins

Hans Memling·1479

Historical Context

Hans Memling's Triptych of Jan Floreins, painted in 1479, remains in the Sint-Janshospitaal (St. John's Hospital) in Bruges, for which it was commissioned. The triptych depicts the Adoration of the Magi with the donor Jan Floreins, a brother of the hospital. The Sint-Janshospitaal houses a remarkable concentration of Memling's works, making it one of the most important sites for understanding his art in its original devotional and institutional context.

Technical Analysis

Memling's triptych demonstrates his refined narrative technique with carefully staged figures, luminous color, and the smooth, blended oil surfaces that create an atmosphere of serene devotional contemplation.
