Calvary with a Carthusian Monk
Jean de Beaumetz·1390
Historical Context
Jean de Beaumetz, court painter to Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, painted a series of Calvary scenes with Carthusian monks around 1390 for the monks' cells at the Chartreuse de Champmol near Dijon. Each cell received a small devotional panel showing a Carthusian brother kneeling at the foot of the Cross, facilitating private contemplation during the monks' solitary lives. This panel in the Cleveland Museum of Art is one of the finest survivors from this important Burgundian court commission.
Technical Analysis
Painted in tempera on panel with gold ground, the intimate composition juxtaposes the monumental Crucifixion with the diminutive kneeling monk in a format designed for close contemplation. The refined technique shows the influence of the French International Gothic with its elegant linear rhythms and soft, luminous color.
