Christ on the Cross with a Carthusian Monk
Jean de Beaumetz·1392
Historical Context
Jean de Beaumetz served as court painter to Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, and produced a celebrated series of Crucifixion panels for the Carthusian monastery of Champmol near Dijon around 1390-1395. Each cell in the monastery received a painting of Christ on the cross with a kneeling Carthusian monk, creating an intimate aid for monastic contemplation. This commission represents one of the most important surviving ensembles of Franco-Flemish Gothic panel painting.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera and possibly oil on panel, the composition pairs the large-scale crucified Christ with the diminutive kneeling monk in a stark, contemplative arrangement. The refined handling of Christ's anatomy and the monk's white habit reflects the elegant naturalism emerging in Burgundian court art.
