Dancer Seated on a Pink Divan by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Dancer Seated on a Pink Divan

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec·1884

Historical Context

Painted in 1884 and now at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis, this work of a dancer resting on a pink divan belongs to Lautrec's early engagement with theatrical and performance subjects before his mature Moulin Rouge period. By 1884 he was working in Montmartre and becoming increasingly drawn to the world of cabarets, dance halls, and circuses. The dancer at rest — off-stage, unperforming — was a subject Degas had made central to his art, and Lautrec's early dance works acknowledge this debt while moving toward his own more confrontational approach to characterisation.

Technical Analysis

The recumbent dancer is observed without theatrical glamour, the pink divan providing a warm chromatic base against which the figure's more neutral costume and face are set. The early handling shows competent academic training alongside developing boldness in simplifying forms to their essential character.
