Madame Countess Adèle de Toulouse-Lautrec in the Garden of Malromé

Painted in 1880 when Lautrec was only fifteen or sixteen, this portrait of his mother Countess Adèle in the garden of Malromé estate in the Gironde is among the earliest substantial works in his career. Lautrec's mother was one of his most devoted subjects and his closest emotional support throughout his difficult life — she would be present at his death in 1901. The Malromé property was the family's rural retreat in the Bordelais wine country, purchased by Adèle in 1883, though Lautrec had visited earlier. This early oil reveals his precocious grasp of outdoor light and portraiture before his formal training under Bonnat and Cormon.

The teenage Lautrec's handling shows a surprising command of plein-air light, with dappled garden sunlight described through broken strokes that prefigure his later facility. The figure of his mother is rendered with affectionate observation, her form integrated naturally into the garden setting without the posed stiffness of academic portraiture.
