Annunciation
Historical Context
Piermatteo Lauro de' Manfredi da Amelia, an Umbrian painter active in the late fifteenth century, created this Annunciation around 1487. Working in the area around Terni and Amelia, Piermatteo absorbed influences from both the Umbrian school of Perugino and the more decorative traditions of neighboring regions. His Annunciation follows the standard iconographic formula while bringing personal touches to the composition.
Technical Analysis
Tempera on panel with careful perspective construction in the architectural setting. The figures of Gabriel and the Virgin are rendered with the gentle modeling characteristic of the Umbrian school.
