Nuestra Señora de Gracia y los grandes maestres de Montesa
Antoni Peris·1412
Historical Context
Antoni Peris's Nuestra Señora de Gracia y los grandes maestres de Montesa, dated around 1412 and now in the Museo del Prado, is a devotional panel depicting the Virgin of Grace with the grand masters of the Military Order of Montesa, a Valencian military-religious order founded in 1317. The Order of Montesa was established to absorb the Templar properties in the Crown of Aragon after the Templars' dissolution, and such donor panels — showing the order's leaders in humble supplication before the Virgin — were central to its corporate devotional identity. Peris was active in Valencia and represents the International Gothic style as practiced at the Valencian court.
Technical Analysis
Peris employs the gold ground with the kneeling grand masters in their white mantles with the red cross of Montesa arranged below the enthroned Virgin. The scale relationship between the sacred and secular figures follows devotional conventions. Colors are clear and bright in the Valencian Gothic manner.
