Geburt Mariens
Historical Context
Geburt Mariens — the Birth of the Virgin — presents the domestic scene in which Anne, Mary's mother, receives care after the birth while the newborn is bathed and attended by midwives. The apocryphal birth narrative provided artists with a warm, interior setting that contrasted with the public theological drama of most religious subjects. This panel from 1447, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, belongs to the Marian cycle several works by the Master of Schloss Lichtenstein share. The domestic details — swaddling cloths, a bath basin, female attendants — carry theological weight: they establish Mary's full human birth before her elevation as Queen of Heaven.
Technical Analysis
Tempera on panel. Interior space is conveyed through overlapping figures and a modest curtained bed rather than measured perspective. Warm ochres and soft reds dominate the palette, creating a sense of domestic intimacy appropriate to a birth scene.
