Überführung der Gebeine des hl. Oswald by Meister der Oswaldlegende

Überführung der Gebeine des hl. Oswald

Meister der Oswaldlegende·1482

Historical Context

The Meister der Oswaldlegende's Überführung der Gebeine des hl. Oswald — the Translation of the Bones of Saint Oswald — in the Kunsthistorisches Museum depicts the transfer of the relics of the seventh-century Northumbrian king-martyr Oswald, whose cult was transplanted to German-speaking lands through Carolingian missionary activity. Oswald, killed by pagan Mercians while defending Christian faith, was venerated as a royal martyr whose relics worked miracles. The anonymous Austrian master, named for this Oswald cycle, produced panels documenting the specifically north-Alpine reception of Anglo-Saxon hagiographic tradition within Austrian late Gothic altarpiece culture.

Technical Analysis

The translation scene shows a procession carrying the saint's relics in a ceremonial container, with clergy and laypeople attending. The master renders the religious ceremonial with careful attention to ecclesiastical vestments and the architecture of the settings through which the procession moves.
