Paradiesgärtlein
Upper Rhenish Master·1410
Historical Context
The Paradiesgärtlein (Little Garden of Paradise) by the anonymous Upper Rhenish Master, painted around 1410, is one of the most enchanting works of the International Gothic period. Now in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt, this small panel shows the Virgin Mary in a walled garden (hortus conclusus) surrounded by saints, angels, and meticulously painted flowers and birds. The work has been treasured for its botanical accuracy—botanists have identified over two dozen plant species.
Technical Analysis
The painting combines gold-ground tradition with extraordinary naturalistic detail in the plants, birds, and insects, rendered with miniature-painting precision against the stylized garden setting characteristic of the International Gothic.
