The Presentation in the Temple
Lorenzo Ghiberti·1443
Historical Context
Lorenzo Ghiberti is known above all as the sculptor of the Florence Baptistery doors, but his Presentation in the Temple panel reminds us that he trained as a goldsmith and worked across media. Ghiberti's painted works are extremely rare, and any attribution to him represents a significant art-historical claim. The Presentation, depicting the infant Christ's introduction to the Temple under Mosaic law, was a standard devotional subject, but its execution by Ghiberti would make it exceptional as evidence of his pictorial practice alongside his bronze relief narrative cycles.
Technical Analysis
If by Ghiberti, the panel would be expected to show his characteristic qualities from the bronze reliefs translated into paint: shallow but measured spatial recession, refined figure proportions, and careful attention to gesture as a vehicle of emotional meaning. The surface handling would likely reflect the goldsmith's eye for material refinement — thin, precise application over a prepared ground.
