Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints
Carlo Crivelli·1489
Historical Context
The Madonna and Child preside from an elaborate throne amid saints in this 1489 altarpiece at the Gemäldegalerie Berlin. Crivelli's altarpieces transform the conventional sacra conversazione format into displays of extraordinary decorative virtuosity, with fruit garlands, textile patterns, and architectural details rendered with obsessive precision. His work in the Marche towns of Ascoli Piceno and surrounding areas produced some of the most distinctive altarpieces of the Italian Quattrocento.
Technical Analysis
The enthroned Madonna occupies the central axis of a symmetrical composition flanked by standing saints. Crivelli's signature decorative elements—swags of fruit, elaborate thrones, patterned textiles—create a visual richness that distinguishes his altarpieces from all contemporaries. The gold background and raised gesso details give the panel a three-dimensional quality that approaches relief sculpture.
