Madonna with child and saints
Historical Context
Andrea del Verrocchio's Madonna with Child and Saints, painted around 1479 for the cathedral of Pistoia, is an important altarpiece from the workshop of Florence's most influential sculptor-painter-teacher. Verrocchio's workshop trained Leonardo da Vinci, Perugino, and Lorenzo di Credi, and this altarpiece reflects the high technical standards of the bottega. Some scholars have detected the hand of the young Lorenzo di Credi in portions of the painting.
Technical Analysis
The altarpiece demonstrates the precise, sculptural figure modeling characteristic of Verrocchio's workshop, with sharp drawing, clear spatial construction, and the metallic drapery folds that reflect his training as a goldsmith and sculptor.
