Kreuztragung Christi
Historical Context
The Master of the Freising Passion takes his name from a series of Passion scenes created for the cathedral at Freising, near Munich. This Christ Carrying the Cross panel, dating to around 1485, belongs to that cycle depicting Christ's suffering in emotionally charged, crowded compositions. The anonymous master was a leading figure in Bavarian painting of the 1480s. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the Master's characteristic dramatic intensity and crowded, energetic figure groups. The expressive faces of tormentors and mourners show the influence of South German emotional realism.
