Saviour
Pere Teixidor·1425
Historical Context
Pere Teixidor's Saviour, dated around 1425 and held in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, is a devotional panel depicting Christ as Salvator Mundi — the Saviour of the World — giving a blessing and holding the orb of creation. The Salvator Mundi was one of the most important images in Christian devotional art, asserting the universal lordship of Christ over all creation. Teixidor was active in Barcelona and worked in the Catalan Gothic tradition. Such panels were produced for both institutional and private devotional use, the Salvator Mundi type appearing in altarpieces, private chapels, and as independent devotional objects.
Technical Analysis
Teixidor employs a gold ground with Christ rendered frontally in the devotional convention of the Salvator Mundi type: right hand raised in blessing, left hand supporting the orb. The face is characterized with the refined elegance of the Catalan Gothic. Rich vestments and the golden orb create strong decorative impact.
