At the Table of Monsieur and Madame Natanson by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

At the Table of Monsieur and Madame Natanson

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec·1898

Historical Context

Painted in 1898 and now in Houston, this work depicting Thadée Natanson and his wife at their dinner table places Lautrec within the sophisticated Symbolist and Nabi circle gathered around the literary review La Revue Blanche. Thadée Natanson was one of the brothers who ran the influential avant-garde journal that published Mallarmé, Verlaine, and the young Proust, and his wife Misia was a celebrated salon figure who would later marry Sert. Lautrec contributed prints to La Revue Blanche and was a regular at the Natansons' social gatherings — this work documents the overlap between his world and theirs. It is a rare interior social scene from his mature period.

Technical Analysis

The intimate dinner table scene is rendered with Lautrec's characteristic thin oil technique, the figures captured in natural postures of conversation and eating without posed arrangement. The warm table lamp light creates a domestic chiaroscuro that he renders with directional strokes, animating the scene without theatrical exaggeration.
