The Battle of Jemappes by Horace Vernet

The Battle of Jemappes

Horace Vernet·1821

Historical Context

Horace Vernet's The Battle of Jemappes of 1821 depicts the French Revolutionary army's victory over Austrian forces in November 1792 — the first major battle of the Revolutionary Wars and the event that opened Belgium to French conquest. The battle represented the citizen army's first proof that enthusiasm could defeat professional soldiers, and Vernet's treatment commemorated the Revolutionary military tradition in terms politically acceptable to the Restoration government. The painting belonged to a tradition of Revolutionary battle commemoration that the July Monarchy would later exploit more explicitly.

Technical Analysis

Vernet's panoramic composition captures the Revolutionary army's advance with characteristic documentary precision. The crisp rendering of uniforms, smoke, and terrain demonstrates his mastery of military painting conventions.
