Christ on the Cross, and Other Scenes
Historical Context
Niccolò di Liberatore, known as l'Alunno, painted this multi-scene panel of the Crucifixion around 1487 in Umbria. Working primarily in Foligno, he was one of the most productive painters in central Italy, supplying altarpieces to churches across Umbria and the Marches. His expressive, somewhat archaic style persisted alongside the more progressive innovations of Perugino and Pinturicchio. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold on panel with multiple narrative scenes arranged around a central Crucifixion. Niccolò's characteristic emotional intensity and detailed narrative approach are evident in the crowded compositions.
