Adoring Saints: Right Main Tier Panel
Lorenzo Monaco·1408
Historical Context
The right main tier panel of Adoring Saints complements its left counterpart in Lorenzo Monaco's 1408 San Benedetto altarpiece. Together these flanking panels frame the central Madonna, creating a celestial court of saints that exemplifies the hierarchical structure of Italian polyptych altarpieces in the early Quattrocento. Lorenzo Monaco — Piero di Giovanni — was a Camaldolese monk who became one of Florence's most gifted painters in the transition between the Gothic and the Early Renaissance.
Technical Analysis
The panel mirrors the compositional structure of its companion piece, with saints arranged in balanced groups and unified by Lorenzo Monaco's signature palette of ultramarine, rose, and gold.
