The Annunciate Virgin: Frame Roundel (right)
Historical Context
The Annunciate Virgin roundel — the right-side companion to the Gabriel roundel — shows Mary at the moment of receiving the angel's message, typically depicted with a gesture of submission or surprise and a book open before her, the interrupted reading of scripture. This roundel, set within the altarpiece frame, completed the Annunciation scene distributed across the upper structure rather than concentrated in a single main panel. The convention of placing the Annunciation in the frame rather than the main field reflects the altarpiece's complex theological programme, which reserved the central panels for the primary devotional image.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold leaf on panel. The circular format constrains the Virgin to a bust or half-length presentation within the roundel's arc. Her gesture of response to the Annunciation — hands open, gaze slightly lowered — is compressed into the tight circular field with economical compositional skill.
