Madonna with Canon Joris van der Paele
Jan van Eyck·1436
Historical Context
The Madonna with Canon Joris van der Paele, completed by Jan van Eyck in 1436, is one of the largest and most magnificent Netherlandish devotional paintings. Commissioned by the elderly canon for his chapel in the Church of Saint Donatian, Bruges (now destroyed), it shows the donor presented to the Virgin by his patron saints George and Donatian. The painting is now the centerpiece of the Groeningemuseum and represents the pinnacle of Van Eyck's mature sacred art.
Technical Analysis
Van Eyck achieves extraordinary material illusionism in rendering the canon's aged, spectacled face, the gleaming armor of St. George, the jewel-encrusted vestments, and the polished marble columns—each surface exploiting the full potential of the oil medium.
